With words, sentences and stories that all reinforce each lesson, your child will actually have fun mastering the skills reading requires. Success then comes quickly and naturally, driven by your child’s own inner desire to discover more.
Learn to Read with Skip and Daisy goes further than other systems that merely ask children to memorize the words they’re shown. Instead, this program teaches children the basic techniques they need to tackle any word they come across.
Every lesson shows your child how they are improving, giving them not just the ability to read, but the confidence that they can shine both at home and in the classroom.

Discover Learn To Read With Skip And Daisy
Sonya Nelson is the visionary developer who created the acclaimed Learn to Read with Skip and Daisy program. She was inspired to create this solution after watching her daughter Britnee’s personal struggles with reading that began early in grade school. Watching Britnee plunge to what appeared to be borderline illiteracy from her status as an ‘advanced reader’ in first grade let her know she could not stand by and had to take action.
Things started simple enough. Britnee had done quite well in kindergarten, learning her alphabet and a few basic words the way she had been expected to. She even earned a small award for being a child that showed great potential in reading. But things didn’t stay that way.
By first grade, Sonya noticed a change that began with the teaching style used by Britnee’s reading teacher. This style, known as the ‘whole language method’ involved the children following a story in their books as the teacher read it to them aloud. Once the teacher finished reading the story, every child would have a chance to go through the book at read it aloud, as well, in the same way the teacher had. As soon as a child had ‘read’ the story to the teacher’s satisfaction, they would be moved into the next book.
While Britnee certainly seemed to be impressive in the classroom, her mother noticed that when they were trying to read books at home, Britnee was not able to do it if she had never seen the book before. Sonya went to the teacher a few times, but the teacher assured her it would only be a matter of time before the teaching method produced results.
Second grade was just like first grade for Britnee with the whole language method being used yet again. Even though Sonya’s little girl was advancing quickly, she saw trouble begin when the books got more advanced. Suddenly, Britnee’s progression hit a standstill. The teachers said Britnee would be alright, but Sonya knew her daughter was in trouble because she could take a word from one of the books, write it on a piece of paper and Britnee would have no idea what it said. This proved to her mother that Britnee didn’t recognize words once they were out of context.
Sonya began to panic, asking teachers what she could do to help her daughter at home, but the teachers didn’t have ideas for her. She acquired several of the reading programs she could locate, but those were basically boxes of flash cards that Britnee grew bored with after a very short time. Even after trying her best to help her daughter, Britnee scored in the 12th percentile for the reading test administered by the State of California. Things looked bleak.
During the first week of 3rd grade, Sonya got a call from Britnee’s teacher. During their conference, the teacher told Sonya what she already knew: her daughter did not have any idea of how to read. Sonya couldn’t accept that the little girl who had once been called an ‘advanced reader’ was now being called ‘clinically illiterate’ so she took action.
Sonya used her time to study ways of learning to read, discovering systematic phonics, a proven method for success. She also pursued certification as a reading teacher through Read America, a school located in Florida.
In just 4 months, Sonya had taught Britnee to read with precision. She gave up her retail business and decided, instead, she would dedicate herself to teaching children how to read.
Since those early days, Sonya has taught a huge number of children to read. She used her knowledge from successful reading instruction experience to create Learn to Read with Skip and Daisy. It is not just her wish that your child will succeed at reading, though, it is what she guarantees to anyone who tries her program.
